We enjoyed a barbecue dinner at Kim Chi Restaurant in Tanjung Bungah. It is in a double storey semi-d house opposite The Copthrone Hotel. We had the grilled pork and a steaming hot pot of Ginseng Chicken Soup. This barbecue comes with an assortment of "banchan", small side dishes of kimchi, pickled vegetables, tofu, bean sprout, brinjal, egg and bean paste.

There is also a plate of lettuce leaves and perilla leaves for us to wrap our meat. The owner told us that perilla leaves which has a fresh aroma is a herb belonging to the mint family. This leaf can't be found in Malaysia, which is why the owner planted so many of it in the garden.

The plate of marinated meat was quite a big serving. The waiter offer to grill it for us but we wanted to do it ourselves. Its kind of hands-on fun too grilling the meat and wrapping them with the leaves spreaded with bean paste. They provide a pair of tong and scissors to help in the flipping and cutting. The meat is a bit spicy and very tasty.

The Ginseng Chicken Soup is served in an earthen pot with a whole chicken. Glutinous rice, dates, and ginseng were stuffed inside the chicken and boiled until the chicken meat is tender. The rice is sticky and the soup is sweet.

After dinner, we were served dessert - slices of watermelon and a cold sweet rice drink (its free). The decoration of the restaurant is simple but the food and service make up for it. The bbq meat and the soup were both very good. At the moment, they are having the set lunch promotion too.... maybe we will drop by for lunch.

Pei Wen - This restaurant is located in Hillside. It is along the row of houses facing directly opposite Hotel Copthrone.

Do you know if there is a Korean grocery store in Penang? One of my members in my group asked if she can buy a rice cake for dduk bok yi in Penang. I have a blog called nickyskitchen.com.sg and it's all about Korean food.

Thanks
Nicky
