Dining at Ghee Seng Tomyam Seafood Restaurant was a first for us. This Thai restaurant located in Weld Quay has been around for a while and has a reputation for serving authentic Thai cuisine in Penang at very reasonable prices.

We had six dishes to go with rice. Tomyam is a must have dish but in this case, we had the White Tomyam instead of the traditional red version. This hot and sour soup has a lot of chopped garlic, chillies, lime juice, lemon grass and daun limau perut. We just love it.

Stir fried chicken meat with basil leaves in dark sauce.

Deep fried Yam Balls with fillings of minced meat and vegetable. The strips of yam was very crispy.

Mildly spiced Curry with chicken meat and long beans. Recommended!

Thai style fried omelette. Surprisingly this simple dish tasted very good.

Stir fried vegetable.

Presentation of the restaurant is kept simple (no frills and air-con).

Haha.. NKOTB.. you won't get hurt in the pocket with this stall. I do not think it would be extremely expensive. Am I not right CK?

Anyway, we were just there on Friday. You should have ordered the Thai Lobak. It's great!!

New kid on the blog - the prices
are very reasonable and Criz is right about that. Maybe reason being located in a coffeeshop.

Most of the dishes for 3 person serving is below RM10 whereas the tomyam is slightly more.

Criz Lai - This is one place offering cheap and tasty Thai food. There are many more dishes yet to try out including those Lobak recommended by you...tks.

looks like a good place to try!

Buzzingbee - For a change, go for the white tomyam...the soup is so pungent.

Can never get enough of Thai! Definitely trying this, especially the yam balls and the clear tomyum!

550ml jar of faith - I totally agree with you...one can never get enough of Thai food...spicy and appetizing...always end up saying "tambah nasi".

I am sure of myself visiting it again for its tasty food :)

If I go there, i sure will order
Stir fried chicken meat. Looks so nice. =)

CK Lam said... @ June 23, 2008 at 11:37 PM

Jeromefo - it looks nice and taste good too...the gravy of this dish is good enough for you to finish up a plate of rice and by the way, this place serve free flow of rice with a fixed charge :D

the yam balls look inviting. kinda resemble Wu Kok?
the curry chicken uses breast meat? nice twist, no need to pick the bones! :)

Must be a fulfilling simple dining, right? I have never try white tom yam before. Looks great!

CK Lam said... @ June 24, 2008 at 11:13 PM

J2kfm - There is a mixture of breast meat and pieces of drumstick meat in the curry dish.

I like your idea of seeing the yam balls differently...must try it, they are very yummy :D

Little inbox - this was the first time that we tasted white tomyam...it was simply delicious.

After the first visit, we have revisited it several times and without fail, we always order the white tomyam.

after reading your blog, I just had
to go taste this white tom yam.
it was not spicy, tasted like dishwater and a real
disappointment, one of the worst
I have ever tasted in Penang

the fried yam balls looked crispy,
but were hard as rocks. must have been sitting there for days

the curry chicken was insipid

lobak was way below average, and cannot compare to our local version

crab tang hoon was very bland

therefore not surprisingly, the fried omelette was tasty and
is the best dish when the
rest of the dishes were so bland

is it the expectation of locals to eat such bland thai food ?

the bill came up RM 65 for 7 dishes
for 5 people. this is the only part of the meal that you cant complain about. the cook is a thai
lady who took the orders as well.
she was quite pleasant

will not be returning

for really authentic thai food, perhaps you guys
should try Lemon Grass in Jalan Sungai Kelian, Tanjung Bunga
it is not cheap, but you get the real taste

and I will be watching out for your
review of Chok Dee in Burmah Road, how does this
compare to Lemon Grass ?

Just a minor correction but to clear the confusion, its actually CLEAR tom yum. The WHITE tom yum style is referred to TOM KHA(coconut milk based tom yum)

My vote goes to Chok Dee for most authentic Thai cuisine in Penang. Compared to their competitors, Chok Dee may not be the most reasonable but you're definitely paying for quality.

Anonymous - Thanks for highlighting it.
I will drop by your recommended Chok Dee one of these days and try out the food.
